You know it is a good sign when the machine you are thinking about buying is a Consumer Digest Best Buy. The Brother PE770 5×7 inch Embroidery-Only Machine carries this distinction. That means the Brother PE770 has been recognized as a great value and a quality machine. But I wanted to find out for myself what made this embroidery machine so special. I did my research and now here is my Sewing Judge Brother PE770 5×7 inch Embroidery-Only Machine Review.
A Memory System Ready to Go To Work
Load Your Designs and Stitch
The Brother PE770 comes with built-in memory. I like the idea of being able to use a full sized computer to download and view new embroidery designs. But it is also very nice to not have to leave your embroidery machine once you sit down to get to work. With built-in memory, once a design is loaded you are ready to start stitching. In addition, if you are using your machine to make multiple copies of the same item, such as placemats, holiday gifts or other matching items, it is very convenient to load and keep your design directly in your embroidery machine’s computer memory.
Flexible Memory Transfer Options
The PE770 arrives with 136 patterns built-in and is compatible with design selections from iBroidery.com. With the Brother PE770’s USB port, you can quickly add any designs you’ve downloaded onto your desktop computer by a memory stick. The PE770 also has a memory card slot. This means you can purchase an embroidery card with a full set of designs for your machine. Brother’s select embroidery cards include a full set of monogram designs and a card filled with classic crochet inspired patterns. You can also purchase a blank card for conveniently storing and transferring your own designs. This level of memory and upload flexibility makes the PE770 a prime choice for home-business embroiderers.

Fast Machine Set Up
Stitcher Friendly Threading System
There seems to be almost universal agreement that Brother embroidery machines are easy to learn about and use. The Brother PE770 is no exception. The PE770 has numbered threading instructions printed right on the machine, an automatic needle threading system and uses a drop in bobbin. A push-button automatic thread cutter snips bottom at top threads evenly every time. It should go without saying by now, but you need to use quality threads when operating an embroidery machine. The Brother PE770 is no exception to this rule. Use a lighter thread for the bobbin, usually a 90 weight thread, to keep your deign from being bulky and your machine running smoothly.
Easy Touch Screen Interaction
The LED screen’s touch system allows you to select the options you want with a finger touch then slide to the next option with ease.
But most importantly, the Brother PE 700 Embroidery Machine comes with everything you need to get started right out of the box. The PE770 even offers built-in tutorials that can be viewed on the LCD screen to guide you through the setup process.
Professional Level Design
Multiple Hoop Sizes
I’ve learned that using the smallest hoop possible for your project leads to the best results. But, having the right hoop for the job is important. Many less expensive machines offer smaller hoop sizes than the Brother PE770. If you purchase a machine with a maximum 4 by 4 inch field, you will often not be able to include both a name and design without rehooping.
With a 5 by 7 inch field like the one offered by the Brother PE700, you can embroider a design and personalize without having to worry about rehooping your project. You can also purchase a 4 by 4 inch hoop for smaller or non-customized designs. It is nice to have options since you’ll want the right size to get the best results.
You can even buy a tiny 1 by 2.5 inch hoop for use with the PE770This tiny hoop is perfect for embroidering monograms and designs for infant items. Too cute!
Repositionable Hoop for Larger Projects Without Rehooping
One really neat feature of the Brother PE770 is the optional 5 by 12 inch repositionable hoop accessory. This specialized hoop allows you to create longer designs by starting your embroidery with the hoop on one set of notches on your embroidery arm then shifting the hoop to a new location for the rest of the design. Whether you are making an item to keep, give or sell it would be very disappointing to have it ruined by a rehooping mistake. With this 5 by 12 inch hoop, rather than having to rehoop your fabric, you only need to reposition the hoop.
I think this hoop positioning feature would be of great use for making perfectly embroidered pillow cases or table runners. Imagine how convenient it would be to simply move your hoop and continue your design!

Final Verdict
I will admit that I am spoiled. I have come to expect that a computerized embroidery or sewing machine will come jam packed with features to make sewing and embroidering easy. People today are so busy. If we sit down to make a project, we want to create- not thread needles. So I am happy to note that the Brother PE700 Embroidery Machine meets my minimum standards. With threading and programming features that allow you to get started quickly and make embroidering efficient, this machine is a winner. I guess that means I am in agreement with Consumer Digest that this machine is a best buy.
Yes, Definitely a Best Buy
The affordability of the Brother 770 PE for the features you get is really remarkable. I think I should take a moment to remind you that the Brother 770 PE is for embroidery only. Don’t be surprised when you take it out of the box, this machine does not do regular sewing.
But, sometimes specialization is a good thing. You can start an embroidery project with the bobbin and thread you need and not have to switch it out an hour later to make a quick sewing repair. You have a sewing machine for sewing, this is an embroidery machine. Enjoy the luxury of knowing your Brother PE770 can offer you professional quality embroidery and you don’t have to share it for any other job. Just select your designs, press a few buttons and create.
Hi I am a beginner and I’m trying to find out what’s the best sewing machine for me? I want to make my children clothes! I want to add cuffs and extra stuff to the clothing! Want to spend 350-400$. I want to add vinyl and monogramming to the items!
Hi, according to your comment, I think the Brother LB6800PRW sewing machine is quite fit. Wishing you sew beautiful clothes for your child. Enjoy!
I am new to this and have never owned a monogramming machine. I have been trying to research to see what machine will be best for me. I am wanting to simple 3 letter monograms and names. I have been looking at the brother pe770. With this machine could I monogram clothing, pillow cases, and even seersucker backpacks? Some of the reviews that I read on the brother pe770 people are having trouble with the 3 letter monogram and making the middle initial larger. Is this a problem for everyone? Lastly, where can I purchase new fonts for monogramming? Can I purchase them from etsy or do I have to purchase a program for my computer?
