A lot of people associate sewing as being an “old person” hobby but that’s not the case at all. There’s so much you can do with a sewing machine if you just have a few basic skills. You don’t need to be a professional sewer in order to create some beautiful pieces to enjoy yourself or give to others as gifts. Believe it or not, sewing classes have recently experienced a resurgence of popularity.
In today’s technology-obsessed society, a lot of people are looking for new ways to step away from their computers and phones and have real experiences. Sewing is one of those things that is tangible, hands-on and creative. And it’s not just for women. Men can learn too and not be afraid of getting their “man card” revoked!
Sewing Classes Teach You Tangible Skills
Learning to sew will teach you something you can do with your hands. In a day and age when so many people are attending college (which is a good thing!), some are learning less hands-on skills. It’s more therapeutic than you realize. Sitting down with a pile of fabric in front of you and deciding what you’re going to craft it into is a liberating feeling. There’s no rules, no restrictions, it’s all about what you want. When else do you get the chance to do that in life?
Create Something to Be Proud of
You won’t believe how proud you’ll be of yourself when you finish your first project! I still remember the first project I made, and I couldn’t believe how happy I was. I had taken fabric and made it into something that could be used. After that, it inspired me to make countless different things. Pillows, blankets, doll dresses, you name it! I realized that I could do anything I put my mind to. Once I learned the basics of sewing, it was easy to experiment. I still made mistakes, but that was okay because I learned from them and became a better sewer because of it.
Make New Friends
Sewing classes are a very social experience! Everyone collaborates on ideas and trades suggestions back and forth. If you’re not sure if the fabrics you picked match each other, ask a classmate! Go out for drinks afterwards and get to know each other a bit. If you’re all learning how to do the same hobby, chances are that you have other things in common too!
When you’re learning, it really is more fun to sew in a group. Since you all have different strengths and weaknesses, you can help each other learn. If you’re having trouble with a particular stitch or hem, it’s likely one of your classmates has that mastered. They can help you and you guys can problem solve together.
It’s Fun!
I know I sound like an advertisement for sewing classes but seriously, it really is fun! And I’m not selling anything. Don’t be afraid to try something new. I know I struggle with that. Trying a new thing can be scary because you don’t know what to expect and you don’t want to fail. Sewing classes expect you to be a beginner and you don’t need to be afraid of others making fun of your lack of skills.
So go for it! If you’ve always wanted to learn how to sew, now is the time! Most classes are inexpensive and some even give you a machine to use there so you don’t have to buy one up-front. This is great because obviously, sewing isn’t for everybody. You’ll likely love it but if you don’t, then at least you haven’t invested in an expensive machine.
Enjoy the experience of learning. It’s there, waiting for you to learn and make it whatever you will. Learn a new skill and enjoy that wonderful sense of accomplishment!
